Unintentionally, she had been telling him, “You are not like us”—which he took to mean “less than.” The mum immediately realized her mistake. “Sweetheart,” she said, “I want you to wear sunscreen so that you can protect your beautiful fair skin that I love so much.”

We can help our children to feel more comfortable in their own skin if we think of our words as sunscreen protecting their developing psyches.
